On Wednesdays We Journal // 10 – Rest

Rest. What does that mean/look like for you? This is soap box topic for me but for now, we’ll focus on the current situation. I have not read any negative comments re: Simone and Naomi because I don’t fucking care what mean-spirited strangers on the internet have to say about black women. Especially strangers who couldn’t be bothered to wear a mask. Seriously, don’t get me started. While I haven’t read the nasty shit people are undoubtedly saying, I instinctively KNEW people were going to talk shit. Black women protecting their peace? Black women making decisions for themselves? They hate to see it.

Which brings me here: how can I protect my peace? Knowing that my peace is a part of my health, what can I do to ensure its stability? My answer? Rest. Take a break when I need to. Put my phone on “do not disturb” when I need to. Journal when I need to. Say “nah” when I need to. Part of The Nap Ministry’s teachings is “refuse to donate your body to these violent systems.” Your body includes your mind. In a previous blog post, we talked about rest. Now is the perfect time to revisit that post and incorporate your favorite rest practices.

One more thing: these conversations around rest, liberation, and the realms of health are important. To be a black woman in this world is one thing. To be a black woman plus the GOAT in your field on a world stage is a whole different thing. These situations bring to light the fact that we must be able to hold space for mental health discussions and healing. We must prioritize all realms of our health.
